Many spiritual sanctuaries of the world’s religions can be found in the small mountain town of Crestone, Colorado. The town is nestled at the base of the Sangre de Cristo range with a population of about 145 residents.

Crestone is widely popular for its mountainous terrain, ghost towns, and alpine views, but the mountain town is also home to many spiritual centers representing various sects of at least 7 different religions including Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, Catholicism, Christianity, and more. In the case of Tibetan Buddhism, at least six different spiritual centers can be found around town, each representing a different organization.

Crestone has a history of influencing the spirituality of those who visit. The early Spanish settlers of the area saw the sunset’s red glow on the mountain range and were ultimately inspired to name them the Sangre de Cristos, which translates to “blood of Christ.” The vast, sweeping valleys surrounded by mountains have also been compared to scenes found in Tibet.

At this spiritual Colorado spot, visitors can find ashrams, monasteries, temples, spiritual retreat centers, stupas, labyrinths, and other sacred sites. One of the most unique spiritual structures is the Crestone Ziggurat. The stone rectangular brick tower is modeled after the temples of ancient Babylon and can be seen from miles away.
